Salmon and Steelhead Update
Nehalem River - Tillamook, OR
The Nehalem River is offering anglers steady action right now, with fall Chinook salmon and late summer steelhead making strong appearances. Water levels have been favorable after recent rains, and fish are moving upriver in good numbers. Mornings have been the most productive, with backtrolling plugs and bait producing consistent bites.
Chinook salmon are showing excellent size this season, with several fish in the 20- to 30-pound range landed over the past week. Steelhead are also active, especially in the upper stretches, giving anglers exciting opportunities for fast runs and hard fights. Local knowledge has been key in finding the right holding water, as fish are moving quickly through the system.
Anglers should be prepared for changing conditions as cooler weather continues to push fish upstream. Targeting travel lanes and slower holding pools has proven effective, and both roe and plugs have been standout baits. With the river in good shape and fish on the move, the Nehalem is fishing well and promises solid opportunities in the days ahead.
Captain Coleman reports that the season is shaping up to be one of the better ones in recent years, with healthy runs and plenty of action. Whether you’re after a trophy Chinook or eager to test your skills against a powerful steelhead, the Nehalem River is delivering.
